Influence in 2020 is different than it was in 2000 or even 2010. We all have the ability to have an influence over a lot of people and make an impact in a way that wasn’t possible only 10 years ago! But you have to know how build and use that influence. Unfortunately, there is not a formula you can follow because influence is an art and not a science. What works for one person or one situation might not work for another. But you can learn from and be inspired by others who have influence.

Did you know that you don’t have to be famous to have influence? That’s right! If you have even one person connected with you on social media and they consume your content, then you have influence. Whether you influence one person or 1 million, you can use your influence to make a difference. If you’re knowledgeable about and/or passionate about a specific cause, topic, industry, etc., you can use that to build influence. You build true influence by taking a stance on a topic, whether that topic is fitness, cooking, fashion, politics, etc. When you share your opinion on something, people who agree with you will connect with you more and be more likely to become a part of your tribe and take action on what you want them to do. Sure, you’ll make some people mad and lose followers. People who are going to hate are going to hate and you probably can’t influence them anyway. But you’ll be left with those who align with your purpose and attract more people that align with it too.

So, where do you start? Don’t worry about building a large following before you try to have influence. Start by influencing the people who already follow you! Sharing your purposes, your passion, and your beliefs will help you connect with people and get them to follow you and engage with you. Tell stories about you, your life and work, and about other people. And don’t forget the people who are in the middle of whatever topic you’re talking about. They may not know how they feel or have a strong opinion so you may be able to influence them with your purpose, passion, and knowledge. You could have the biggest impact on these people who are somewhere in the middle!

Make 2020 the year where you build your influence and use it in a beautiful way.
